Ādipirāṭṭi

ஆதிப்பிராட்டி

Also known as: Periya Pirāṭṭiyār, Śrī Mahālakṣmī, Sridevi, Adi Piratti

Meaning

Ādipirāṭṭi ('the primordial Goddess') is Śrī Mahālakṣmī as the original, eternal divine consort of Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa, the first and foremost among all divine mothers. In Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology she is the essential purushakāra — the divine mediator whose intercession with Bhagavān secures His grace for bound souls.

Detailed Explanation

The title Ādipirāṭṭi is a Tamil honorific composed of 'ādi' (primordial, first, original) and 'pirāṭṭi' (the Lady, the Queen, a term of deepest reverence for Śrī Mahālakṣmī). The term signals that Śrī Mahālakṣmī is not merely one among many divine consorts but the original, eternally pre-existent, and uniquely supreme feminine principle of the Godhead. In Viśiṣṭādvaita theology, Śrī is the eternal and inseparable divine consort of Bhagavān, not a secondary creation. The technical expression nitya-vibhūti ordinarily denotes Bhagavān's eternal realm or eternal wealth, rather than being a name for Śrī herself. The Divya Dampati — Śrī and Nārāyaṇa — are eternally united.

The doctrinal role of Ādipirāṭṭi as purushakāra (divine intermediary) is central to Śrī Vaiṣṇava soteriology. 'Purushakāra' literally means 'one who recommends a person' — and Śrī Mahālakṣmī is the divine mother who intercedes with Bhagavān on behalf of the bound soul. The theology elaborated in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava sampradāya, particularly through Vedānta Deśika's Śrī Stuti and Piḷḷai Lokāchārya's Śrī Vachana Bhūṣaṇam, explains that Bhagavān, as infinite purity and justice, would be entitled to reject the sinful soul; but Ādipirāṭṭi, in her infinite compassion (kāruṇya) and motherly love (vātsalya), intercedes to request that Bhagavān overlook these faults and receive the soul. Her position is thus structurally essential to the Śrī Vaiṣṇava understanding of mokṣa: the soul cannot reach Bhagavān without passing through Śrī's loving mediation.

Ādipirāṭṭi is the subject of many of the greatest hymns in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava corpus. The Divya Prabandham contains the Tiruppāvai of Āndaḷ, which invokes Śrī Mahālakṣmī's grace at every turn. Vedānta Deśika's Śrī Stuti is an independent Sanskrit hymn entirely devoted to her greatness. She is worshipped as Periya Pirāṭṭiyār in Śrīraṅgam alongside Raṅganātha, as Śrī Devī in Tiruveṅkaṭam, and under various names at all 108 Divya Desams. The Dvaya Mantra begins Śrīman Nārāyaṇa caraṇau śaraṇaṃ prapadye. Its opening expression Śrīman Nārāyaṇa invokes Nārāyaṇa as eternally united with Śrī and thereby gives the puruṣakāra principle a foundational place in prapatti. Thus surrender is directed to the Divya Dampati, with Śrī's compassionate mediation explicitly remembered.
