A Mother's worry - (நல்லது ஓர்)
The mother realized that her daughter had deep love for Krishna and had been united with him. Relatives advised, "Before the townsfolk start speaking ill, take her to the Lord." But the mother didn't listen. One night, while the mother and daughter were sleeping, Krishna took the girl away. The mother woke up and saw that her daughter was missing. She panicked and wailed, lamenting for the daughter she had lovingly raised. What an experience the āzhvār conveys!

  • Verse 1:
    297. Like a pond that has lost its beauty because the falling dew has made fresh lotuses shed their petals and the blossoms to shed their pollen, my house looks empty. I haven’t seen my daughter anywhere. Did she go towards Madhura city following Him who destroyed the Asurans, when they came disguised as wrestlers?

    298. Like the ignorant, simple-looking cowherds who steal calves Nārāyanān has taken away my obedient daughter with him by his charms. Won’t this terrible thing that Nārāyanān did be a disgrace to our family?
  • Verse 3:
    299. We made arrangements for my daughter’s wedding, decorated her beautifully and kept her at home. We announced to our relatives that we are giving her in marriage to Dāmodaran. We made her worship the peepul tree( according to our custom) Will the people beat the sounding drums, and decorate this village with beautiful garlands?

    300. I have only one daughter and I raised her like Lakshmi, the beautiful goddess. The world praises me as a good mother. Lovely-eyed Thirumāl has taken her with him. Will Yashodā, a woman of a respectable family and the mother of a wonderful son, feel happy seeing her daughter-in-law and perform the post-marriage ceremonies for her well? Will I see that?
  • Verse 5:
    301. Will Nandagopan, my daughter's father-in-law embrace her and say, “I am proud to have you as my daughter-in-law?” Seeing her lovely fish eyes, red mouth, round breasts, waist and beautiful arms, will he say, “How can the mother of one like you be able live apart from you?”
  • Verse 6:
    302. Like the hunters and fighters who lead life as they wish, will they lead life together? Will they perform marriage ceremonies and rituals? Will Kannan, who killed the asura who came as a cart, hold my daughter's hand in marriage, according to tradition?
  • Verse 7:
    303. Will the Lord of this cosmos, the One who holds a discus(chakra) accept my daughter and treat her with respect, without blaming her? Will he lead a virtuous life, making her the chief of cowherd clan and give her the rights due amidst his other consorts in the palace?
  • Verse 8:
    304. Nandagopan's son doesn’t do anything that is respectable. He doesn’t follow our customs. O my god, my daughter’s waist is becoming thin and she is longing for a better life. Will her hands become rough always churning buttermilk and holding the churning rope?
  • Verse 9:
    305. Can my daughter wake up before dawn and churn the white yogurt, losing good sleep? Will he, with shining lotus eyes, who measured the world, make her do hard work or will he keep her happy?
  • Verse 10:
    306. The chief of flourishing Puduvai composed ten pāsurams describing how a good mother went to a cowherd village searching for her daughter who went away with Māyavan and how she got worried if her daughter could live as the daughter-in-law there. Those who recite the pāsurams of Vishnuchithan, will become the devotees of the sapphire-colored lord.
