மன்மதன் துன்புறுத்துகிறானே!

2757 தென்னன்பொதியில் செழுஞ்சந்தின்தாதளைந்து *
மன்னிவ்வுலகை மனங்களிப்பவந்தியங்கும் *
இன்னிளம்பூந்தென்றலும் வீசுமெரியெனக்கே *
முன்னியபெண்ணைமேல் முள்முளரிக்கூட்டகத்து *
பின்னுமவ்வன்றில் பேடைவாய்ச்சிறுகுரலும் *
என்னுடையநெஞ்சுக்கு ஓரீர்வாளாம் என்செய்கேன்? *

Simple Translation

2757. and the cool moon sheds its hot rays on me. How is it their nature has changed? The sweet breeze carrying the fragrance of the blossoms on the southern king Pandiyan’s mountain Pothiyam, mingled with the smell of sandal wood and the pollen of flowers blows making all the people of the world happy. But to me that fresh breeze is as if burning air were streaming on me. As the andril bird in a nest made of screw pine flower on a palm tree calls her beloved male bird with her small voice it is like a sword splitting open my chest. What can I do? “ (47)

madhi uguththa in nilā in kadhirum — the sweet light emitted by the rays of the moon; en thanakkĕ — only for me; veydhu āgum — emitted heat; thannudaiya thanmai thavira thān en kol — ḍid anyone do anything to convert the natural quality of coolness of the moon to a hot state like this?; thennan podhiyil — in the malaiyamalai (podhigai mountain) of the king of pāṇdyas, who is the chief of the southern region; sezhu sandhin thādhu al̤aindhu — mixing the pollen from the beautiful sandalwood trees; man i ulagai manam kal̤ippa vandhu iyangum — roaming such that the minds of the people, who are in this permanent world, are happy; in il̤a pū thenṛalum — the southerly breeśe which is sweet, youthful [full of vigour] and fragrant; enakkĕ eri vīsum — is blowing fire only for me; munniya peṇṇai mĕl — on the palm tree seen in front; mul̤ mul̤ari kūdu agaththu — in the nest made with lotus stem which has thorns; pinnum avvanṛil siṛuvāych chiṛu pedaiyum — feeble voice emanating from the mouth of the female love bird which has locked its beak with that of the male; ennudaiya nenjukku ŏr ir vāl̤ ām — it is like a unique sword which cut my heart; en seygĕn — what means will ī carry out (to escape from this)?
