தசாவதாரம் எடுத்தவனே என்னை மயக்கியவன்

2769 பொன்னியலும்வேள்விக்கண் புக்கிருந்து * போர்வேந்தர்
மன்னைமனங்கொள்ள வஞ்சித்துநெஞ்சுருக்கி *
என்னுடையபாதத்தால் யானளப்பமூவடிமண் *
மன்னா! தருகென்று வாய்திறப்ப * -

Simple Translation

2769. he went as a bachelor to the golden sacrifice of king Mahābali. He cheated the heroic king, melted his heart by pretending to be a sage. He asked the king, ‘O king, I want three feet of land and I will measure the distance with my feet. ’ (59)

பொன் — தங்கம் தானம்; இயலும் — செய்யப்படும்; வேள்விக் கண் — யாக பூமியில்; புக்கு இருந்து — போய்ச்சேர்ந்து; போர் — போர் செய்யவல்ல; வேந்தர் — மிடுக்கை உடைய; மன்னை மனம் — அந்த மகாபலியை; கொள்ள — யாசிப்பதற்காகவே வந்தானென்று; வஞ்சித்து — நம்பும்படியாக மயக்கி நடையழகு சொல்லழகு; நெஞ்சு உருக்கி — ஆகியவற்றால் மனதை உருக்கி; என்னுடைய பாதத்தால் — என்னுடைய பாதத்தால்; யான் அளப்ப — நானே அளந்து கொள்ளும்படி; மூவடி மண் — மூவடி மண்; மன்னா தருக! — மன்னனே எனக்குத் தருவாயாக; என்று வாய் திறப்ப — என்று யாசிக்க

pon iyalum vĕl̤vikkaṇ pukkirundhu — taking abode in the yāgabhūmi (the place where mahābali conducted the ritual) where gold was being gifted; pŏr vĕndhar mannai — that māvali who is the chief of kings who have the strength to indulge in war; manam kol̤l̤a vanjiththu — bewildering him to make him believe (that this bachelor has come only to seek alms); nenju urukki — softening his heart (through the beauty of his gait, speech etc); manna — ŏh ḵing!; ennudaiya pādhaththāl yān al̤appa — by measuring with my foot; mū adi maṇ tharuga enṛu — saying ‘give me three steps of land’; vāy thiṛappa — as he asked, opening his mouth
