Simple Translation

2309. The highest lord, our father resting on the snake bed, who drank milk from the breasts of the devil Putanā and who fought the Bhārathā war to help the five Pāndavās, feared the spanking with a churning stick by the cowherdess Yasodha when he stole the butter. What a surprise?

வாள் — வாள் போன்ற; எயிற்று — பற்களையுடையவனும்; பேய்ச்சி பால் — பூதனையின் பாலை; உண்ட — பருகினவனுமான; பிரான் — பெருமான்; அடைந்தது — பள்ளி கொண்டது; அரவு — ஆதிசேஷன்; அணைமேல் — படுக்கை மேலாகும்; அன்று — அன்று; ஐவர்க்கு ஆய் — பாண்டவர்களுக்காக; மிடைந்தது — நடத்தியதோ; பாரத வெம் போர் — கடும் பாரதப் போராகும்; உடைந்ததுவும் — அஞ்சி நடுங்கியதும்; ஆய்ச்சிபால் — யசோதையின்; மத்துக்கே — மத்துக்கே அன்றோ?; அம்மனே! — என்ன ஆச்சர்யம்!

vāl̤ eyiṛu — having teeth which are like sword; pĕychchi — pūthanā’s; pāl — bosom milk; uṇda — one who drank and killed her; pirān — the benefactor; adaindhadhu — reached out to take rest; aravu aṇai mĕl — on top of ādhiṣĕshan as mattress; anṛu — at one point of time; aivarkku āy — for the five pāṇdavas; midaindhadhu — conducted vehemently; bāradha vempŏr — the rigorous bhāratha battle [ held at kurukshĕthra]; udaindhadhuvum — trembling with fear; āychchipāl — towards the cowherd person yaṣŏdhā’s; maththukkĕ — staff; ammanĕ — how amaśing!

Detailed Explanation

Avathārikai

In this verse, the Āzhvār reveals a most profound and comforting truth concerning the destiny of those souls who have taken refuge in Sriman Nārāyaṇa. He proclaims that such surrendered souls will experience the consequences of their past misdeeds only on that day when the Pāṇḍavas themselves, without the aid of Lord Kṛṣṇa, manage to destroy their adversaries.
